The Y Central South Island supported by Welcoming Communities through the Timaru District has recently run an 8-week empowerment course “Sakina” for young Muslim girls in their Sophia Street Youth and Community Development space.

By focusing on the voices and lived experiences of Muslim girls, Sakina offers an environment where participants can explore who they are, reflect on their cultural and faith-based identities, and develop the confidence to challenge harmful norms, build meaningful connections, and imagine bold futures. Through creative activities, guided discussions, and collective sisterhood, the programme supports girls in becoming emotionally grounded, socially aware, and visibly empowered within their communities.

“When a young person has been resettled from their home country, the displacement they feel is very real.  They must overcome language barriers, cultural and religious barriers and resettling in a new country is overwhelming!” says Mia D’Souza, Youth Practitioner for the Y.

The overall goal of the programme is for participants to have and increased confidence in their identity, including faith, culture, and values. They will have improved emotional wellbeing, stronger peer connections, and greater self-esteem and body confidence. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of their rights, boundaries, and how to navigate relationships and peer pressure. They’ll feel empowered to speak up, set goals, and see themselves as leaders in their communities. Creative outputs like journals and collages will reflect their growth, and they will leave with a strong support network and ongoing access to resources.

“We have been really happy with the interaction and participation, along with support from Refugee Settlement Services and local businesses including Ballantynes who provided participants with a sponsored care package for each girl.  Together we can make such a difference”.
